Almost time for finals….

Finals week is about to come, many are starting to get prepared for those long and exhausting study hours. Even though we all want to do good on our finals, it is important to always take into consideration that our body can only take some stress. Here are some tips that can help you out during finals week. These tips will tell you how to relax, manage your time wisely and study better.

Time management. Plan, plan, plan. Before finals begin, get out your calendar and schedule as much of your finals week as possible. Then stick with the schedule.

Schedule in study breaks. Don’t plan to study non-stop for the next five days. You’ll go insane, and you’ll be too fried to do well on the exams. When you write your schedule, include short study breaks to help you recharge. You’ll feel so much better and will be able to concentrate so much more.

Schedule in sleep. Some people can function well on three hours of sleep a night. Most cannot. You’ll do much better during exams if your mental state is good, and sleep is essential for this.

Exercise. There’s no better source for stress relief. Just don’t overdo it to the point that you’re procrastinating heavily. Go for short, stress-relieving activities, like racquetball or a treadmill run. And don’t underestimate the value of a brisk walk.

Prioritize. You have limited time to study and will have to choose what to spend the most time with. You could spend hours and hours on that math exam because if you do really well, you might be able to pull of a C. Or you can spend hours and hours on a history exam because if you do well, you’ve got a good shot at an A. It’s up to you.

Form effective study groups. Just don’t waste your time with lousy ones.

Free your schedule. As much as possible, eliminate other responsibilities. Work fewer hours. Put off social events. Definitely put off shopping.

Ask your professor for help. If you’re confused about your notes or the readings, go to the resident expert. This works much better if you don’t put off studying until the last minute. It’s a good idea to read through all of your notes before you start to study, so that you can inquire early about things that confuse you.

Keep things in perspective. What’s the worst thing that can happen if you don’t do well on this test? Excessive stress will make you crazy and hurt your performance on tests, so as much as you can, relax. And if you’re having serious problems with anxiety during final exams, seek help at your school’s counseling center. This is a common problem that schools are well equipped to help you with.

REMEMBER: your health comes first. Take one test at a time and everything will seem easier.

Should Preachers Be Aloud on-campus?…

As most of you might know, there was an altercation between a Georgia Southern student (Richard Stock) and Micah Armstrong, better known as Brother Micah. The encounter took place close to the Russell Union; strategic place, given that most students have to walk by there to get to their classes or the stop bus.

For those who do not know what I am talking about, the story goes like this…

Apparently, Stock got angry due to the things that Micah was saying. He got to close to him and invaded his “personal space”, factor which caught a university police attention. The officer asked Stock to back off and he didn’t. After asking him a couple more times, Stock decided to start walking away from the cop and eventually he started running. The cop got a hold of him and arrested him.

Now that everyone is on the same page; do you think that preachers should be allowed to preach on campus? It is true that this is an open campus, and that we all have freedom of speech; however, doesn’t that right end when you are causing harm to another person with your words. I believe that Brother Micah comments about homosexuals for example, were completely out of place. That was disrespectful, and comments like these are the ones that can cause altercations to happen. In my personal opinion, I believe that since there are students of different sexual orientations, different religions, and most importantly different values and beliefs, preachers should not be allowed on Georgia Southern Campus.

Homecoming week is here!!…

One of the biggest events of the semester is now taking place!…Homecoming week started off :

Monday, Nov 9 with Paint the Campus at the Russell Union Rotunda.
On Tuesday: Sculpt it for the Hungry at the Russell Union Rotunda as well.
Wednesday activity is: Canie-Vorous Blood Drive at the Russell Union Ballroom.
Thursday activity will be: You’re a Freak….for GSU Tailgating, Big Fan on Campus and Shirts du Soleil, at the Russell Union Rotunda, from 11:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.
Friday (when the real fun starts) HOMECOMING PARADE!!!…from 4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Come and enjoy with everybody else the beautiful floats that different organizations around campus put together. The theme for this year is CIRCUS.
Finally, SATURDAY!!….BLUE OUT FOOTBALL GAME—- GEORGIA SOUTHERN VS. FURMAN at the Paulson Stadium at 2:00 p.m.

Don’t stay at home, come out, tailgate and have lots of fun…… we all have to support the Georgia Southern Football team, and what a better way than by engaging in all these fun activities.

GO EAGLES!!!!!!!!

Burkina Faso in need….

For all of you who do not know, here on campus we have a lot of students from a country named Burkina Faso. These students are now in desperate need to find donations to send to their beloved country. People at Burkina Faso are in such a need for clothing or any type of donation, after a horrible natural disaster that left death and homeless people on its way. Last week this group of students along with other organizations such as the International Club, the Biology Club, Delta Sigma Tau, Tau Sigma and the International Ambassadors collected and packed 1200 lbs of cloths, surpassing their goal for collecting cloths by 700 lbs. The students did not only receive aid from fellow students; the office of admission took great part in this activity. The office of Admission helped them with transportation and a place where people could come and leave the cloths they wanted to donate.

Donation can still be received at Lewis Hall in Sweetheart circle. If you wish to share the cloths you do not use anymore with someone who lost everything, you are more than welcome to come by, drop it off and feel good.

We have a new President!!!….

The presidential campaign to become Georgia Southern’s next president is finally over. Georgia Southern now has a new president. Brooks A. Keel was the candidate chosen to run the university. According to an interview the George Anne made to Keel, he seems really excited of being selected as our president. Keel is currently the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development at Louisiana State University.

Keel will be assuming his responsibilities as Georgia Southern’s president in the next few months. He seems to have great projects to make Georgia Southern an academically higher institution. Lets all just wait and see what this new president has prepared for all of us….

Is this really a safe campus?

Even though Georgia Southern was recently ranked one of the safest campuses in the nation, the events that have been occurring lately demonstrate the opposite. For all of those who did not receive an eagle alert with the news, on Tuesday a student was robbed by three guys at The Point at Southern. This is one of the off campus apartment complexes which is relatively close to campus. There was a witness at the scene, and the student who got robbed provided a description of the thief’s to the Statesboro Police. The Statesboro Police is offering a reward to anyone who can identify these men. Here are the descriptions:

one black male, approximately 5’11″, wearing a long-sleeve black shirt, black ball cap, and dark jeans
one black male, approximately 5’9″ – 5’11″, wearing a white hoodie with gold trim, a red bandana, and a black jacket
one white male, approximately 6’2″, wearing a navy hoodie, black bandana and dark pants

It is very important to note that it is not safe to be walking around campus o any other part of town at night and alone. Please take the necessary precaution and make a use of the public safety emergency buttons located on campus in case of any emergency.

Here are some tips you should follow to be safe at all times:

1. Travel in groups. Do not walk alone at night. You may request an escort from Public Safety by calling 912-478-5234.
2. Call 911 to report suspicious persons or activity in or around your neighborhood.
3. Avoid shortcuts and dark, isolated areas.
4. Walk purposefully, know where you are going, and project a no-nonsense image.
5. Avoid potentially dangerous situations.
6. If you feel threatened, cross the street, locate an emergency phone, or enter a store or place of business even if you have just left it.
7. Have your door keys ready; carry them in your pockets, not buried in a purse.

Fun Times in the Boro!!!

This weekend Oct 16-17, fall family weekend will be taking place. The office of orientation is expecting about 800 families that have already registered and are set to come and have a blast. A dessert reception will be offered Friday night for all of those who are registered. Now the fun part about fall family weekend is Saturday’s tailgate at the Paulson Stadium. There will be hot dogs, hamburgers and barbecue among many other delicious things. The families will enjoy a good time where they will have the opportunity to mingle and meet new people!

Our cheerleaders will be there to entertain the crowd and pump them up for the game. Many student organizations as well as clubs are volunteering for this event. Volunteers will be in charge of mingling with the guests, help with registration, making sure the tailgate area is clean, and at the same time try to have a great time as well.

After this fun tailgate everyone will head over to the stadium and enjoy the game. GO EAGLES!!
